I (sadly, used to) run ArchLinux on my Thinkpad X31. I have tried Gentoo and Slackware, but I switched to [http://www.archlinux.org ArchLinux] because of it's stable, recent packages, simple, intuitive package-management system, and its user repository. For most people, I recommend Ubuntu or Linux Mint, although this page will cover neither.
A couple of quick reasons to run Linux are:
- You free yourself from restrictive licenses. You actually own your computer when you run Linux and you can rest assured that your future upgrades will be free (as in beer).
- You have package management. All programs install through a single interface and if a program needs something else to run, that dependence will be automatically installed.
Linux is [:Green:green]. Linux has far lower minimum requirements than competing operating systems and systems run comfortably under Linux far longer than their counterparts. This means fewer upgrades and less technological waste.
